Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is an ideal destination for a villa break all year round. As the sun never stops shining here thanks to the islands location close to the Tropic of Cancer.

Lanzarote was first discovered during the 14th century and became a part of the growing Spanish empire some 100 years later. For centuries the island relied on agriculture and fishing, before the advent of modern day tourism in the early 1970´s. Which really took off – so much so that by the 1980´s little Lanzarote was a big favourite with tourists from the UK and Germany and receiving over 2 million visitors a year.

Today these numbers have been whittled away a little by the arrival of newer holiday options on the scene. But Lanzarote remains a firm favourite with British tourists – with over 80,000 touching down on the island last month alone. In part this is due to the fact that there are cheap flights to Lanzarote available from most of the airports in the UK. And plenty of competing airlines to choose from too, so creating lower prices for travellers.

Lanzarote boats three main holiday resorts which is where most visitors tend to stay. And this is where the best accommodation can be found too. With a wide array of Lanzarote villas and apartments available for rent alongside hundreds of hotels. Prices are reasonable – with the average four star establishment currently charging around €60 per room per night.

The cost of living on the island is also much cheaper than in countries such as the UK too. Eating out is an affordable luxury as opposed to something that requires taking out a mortgage. With set menus and tapas offering seriously cheap alternatives. And even holiday extras such as car hire and petrol are much more affordable. For example car hire in Lanzarote starts at about €13 per day.

It´s certainly advisable to hire a car as although the island is small and there is a local bus service many of the main attractions lie well away from these routes and can only be reached by car or tour bus. If you don’t fancy driving then there are plenty of companies that organise guided tours of the island. Which all take in key sights such as the volcanic region and the creations of Cesar Manrique.

The journey time to Lanzarote from the UK is just four hours and EU residents don’t require any special entry visas.
